When we were voting on our next Member of the Month, Lorien was a clear front runner.  Lorien has been a regular member for so long that her youngest daughter (now 10) is the little girl in this picture.

There have been ups and downs, a move out of state and then a move back to Columbia. But hard core to the bone, Lorien has stuck with it.  

The biggest reason Lorien stood out to me for our Member of the Month accolade is her recent decision to obtain a healthy weight that she felt happy with inside and out.  Lorien committed to a much healthier journey of improving her body composition than other strategies she had done in the past and started our self-paced nutrition coaching back in April.  Since starting, she has navigated some pretty major roadblocks to change her thinking and approach to weight loss and eating in general.  

The key moment that stands out to me the most was right before Halloween. Lorien had made a MAJOR commitment to eating exclusively whole foods (nothing processed) and had been working out 5-6 days per week as well as increased her training to include the Murph Training as well.  She had stuck with it for two whole painful weeks and she got on the scale after all that hard work to discover that she had barely lost 1 lb!  Distraught doesn’t even come close to describing the way she felt that day.   We had a conversation where I basically had to ask her to have faith that what she was doing WAS working and to give it another 6 weeks.  She knew that quitting would only leave her  where she had started. It took every bit of Grit she could muster to not just give up and grab a slimfast shake.  Now she is really starting to see the results! She is  down 11.5 lbs and 3% body fat WITHOUT losing an ounce of muscle!  Words cannot describe how proud I am of Lorien and the challenges she has overcome.  She is crushing our KORE value Focus on QUALITY of life and creating a body that is healthy on the inside as well as outside!  And in the process she is making some habit changes that will last well beyond achieving that goal weight to make this the last battle with weight she ever has to fight.  Congratulations on the progress, now it’s time to crush this 2018 goal!

Lorien overall deserved member of the month.  She is one of our clients who comes the most consistent to the gym and always shows up at the same time. She comes at least five times a week and sometimes six. She is always early for class and doesn’t go unnoticed. Also, she takes an active role in getting to know those who are newer to the gym while waiting for the class to start.

Over the last month she has embraced grit. She has overcome adversity and hardships. Instead of letting her failures drag her back, she used it as information to help her push even harder. And that is exactly what everyone’s mind set needs to be!

My favorite accomplishment I’ve seen her complete is her approach to weight loss. As a trainer, I push her to her limits even when she feels like quitting. I also give her some pointers on food choices. So when she comes to me with a smiling face and says, “I lost another pound” it makes me feel great because doing my job, helps get even closer to achieving her goals!

  • How did you originally hear about us?

Maggie Lumpkin told me about kore almost 10 years ago! She was rumored to be the “strongest, normal person” I’d ever meet. I was sold. And I’ve been a member since 2008.


  • What prompted you to seek us out once hearing about us?

Gosh, it was so long ago. It was probably to lose baby weight after having our third and final child.


  • What was your initial goal when you signed up with us?

See above.


  • What was holding you back from achieving this goal (before you joined)?

Lack of discipline, lack of knowledge, lack of motivation, lack of community

  • Has this goal changed since you joined KORE Wellness?  If yes, what is your new goal?

I have two main goals right now: to lose weight and to get stronger. I’ve been on the Precision Nutrition program for 7 months now. It has completely changed my view of food in the best way possible. I’m getting stronger by combining boxing, cardio conditioning, boot camp and kettlebell classes into my daily routine.

  • Now that you’re working on/have achieved this goal, has your view of yourself changed?

I’m averaging 1 pound per week of weight loss and I’m optimistic that this trend will continue! I’m starting to like what I see in the mirror! Our kids are 10, 12 & 14 and I love that we are able to do physically challenging activities as a family.

  • How do you feel about your future health?

Fantastic! I’m stronger and more physically fit than I’ve ever been. I love that our family adventures are always strenuous--whitewater kayaking and rafting, hiking, mountain biking are some of our best bonding activities. Getting older doesn’t equal getting weaker. For me it’s just the opposite!

  • What have you liked best about working with us?

Where do I begin? I love the community of encouragement. I love not having to think about my workout. I love knowing I can trust the trainers to correct me and challenge me to pick up a heavier bell. I love the non intimidating, non judgemental, non meat market atmosphere. It’s a place for real people who want to be pain free and healthy.

  • What would you say to someone who is struggling with the same goal(s)?

Slow and steady wins the race! I was truly convinced I was doing all the things right, but the results weren’t changing. The change has come not from a diet but a perspective shift. Keep showing up at kore, keep making good choices one meal at a time and keep doing the right thing, despite your feelings. The payoff is worth it!
