Time Management: Dreams vs Reality

Personal Training in Columbia - K.O.R.E. Wellness

We are all searching for ways to get a little bit more time back in our week.   If you take a good look at all of the things that demand your time, generally everything you do falls into one of these 4 categories:

  • The MOST important uses of your time, and things you MUST continue doing (eating, sleeping, working, picking the kids up from activities, brushing your teeth, exercising, etc)
  • Things you can delegate to someone else by providing the right training or find a way to make more efficient (grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, carpooling, morning/evening routine, yard work, cleaning, etc)
  • Things you can delegate IMMEDIATELY or reduce your time spent doing significantly (emptying the dishwasher, tidying up, feeding the dog, sorting through junk emails
  • Things you should STOP doing immediately (watching tv/checking email/social media first thing in the morning, stopping at the gas station for a snack on the way home from work, going out to lunch every workday, hitting the snooze 5 times, sitting down on the couch when you get home)

And then, we can’t forget the final category… usually the most important category because the things in this list are usually important to you but not as important as the other things demanding (or sucking) your time above.

  • Things that are not listed but NEED to be (anything that you should have gotten to this week that you didn’t, anything you want to add into your week that you aren’t currently doing)

Once you have an idea of what category each of your daily tasks go into you can start to figure out how to gain some more time back in your week, bit by bit.  A great exercise that we’re doing in this month’s time management challenge is an analysis on where you are versus where you want to be. We’re using a pie chart to determine where are you spending your time vs where you want to be spending your time in an average day.  This exercise is a great to visualize where you are vs where you need to be and start to find the time to get there. (More on this next week)
