How to conduct a year in review

2015 – Year in review.   It’s the last week of the year and time to start reviewing 2015 in preparation for making plans for 2016. A year in review is always something we think about in business but something we rarely think about in our personal life.    In order to set good, achievable goals for the new year, it becomes vitally important to assess what went right and wrong in 2015.   Next week, I’ll be introducing a new method for goal setting in the new year that I am really excited about but before that, lets complete the following exercise.   Step 1: What were your major accomplishments this year?   Make a list of everything you did that you were proud of, obstacles you overcame, goals you reached and were able to cross off your list, good habits you started and stuck with, new experiences you had, etc.   Step 2: What lessons did you learn this year?   If you are like me, you are constantly having ah ha moments and learning new lessons. Take the time to make a list of your biggest lessons this year and what your take away was from each lesson.   Step 3: Rate your year on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) and then explain to yourself why you picked that rating.   If you gave yourself a 3, go into a bit of detail as to why 2015 was a 3 out of 10. What did you or didn’t you do / accomplish to make the year a 3. Also evaluate whether the things that made your year good or bad in your eyes were in your control and how changing something in your control might have changed the outcome.   Step 4: What is next?   Take a minute to get laser focused on what is next for you. How are we going to learn from 2015 and make 2016 better? What is the next chapter in the story of you?     Once you’ve completed this task, hang tight.
