While we all complain about the heat in late July and August, the Midlands are really quite pleasant for much of the year.  If you need nature therapy, while the coast and the mountains are not far away... there are some great places to get some Vitamin N right here in the Midlands… I know I’ve missed a lot of great places but here are 15 that are definitely worth the trip.

  1. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden: We have hands down one of the best zoos in the country, and I’ve been to the acclaimed San Diego zoo.  From the animal attractions to the amazing walk across the Saluda River to see the Botanical Gardens, this day trip has never been a disappointment. For even more fun, you can book a zipline tour and see nature as you zip through the trees around the zoo.

  2. Eudora Farms:  I haven’t been to this one but everyone who has, has given raving reviews.   Located in the town of Sally, this 3-mile drive-thru safari has you looking at giraffes, zebras, llamas, cattle, etc.  You can also opt for the walking tour that puts you in view of lemurs, kangaroos and more.

  3. Float the Columbia Rivers: The three rivers of Columbia give you a great opportunity to get your feet wet, literally.  Kayakers, canoers, and tubers can be seen especially when the weather is warmer out on the river.  If it’s your first time, check out the guided ways that you can access the river safely.

  4. Soda City Market: Quickly becoming one of Columbia’s main attractions outside of Gamecock sporting events, this Saturday market gives you an opportunity to get outside and onto Mainstreet for an opportunity to check out the best that Columbia has to offer.  One of our own members has a booth there selling plant-based food that challenges the notion that healthy can’t taste amazing, check out her Gorilla Boost booth along with 100s of others on Main Street.

  5. South Carolina State House:  While the inside of the state house is impressive, the grounds outside the State house are beautiful and a great place to walk anytime, but especially after you enjoy Soda City Market!

  6. Columbia Riverwalks: There are over 12 miles of trails and boardwalks where you can stroll, cycle, and find great views of the river along with its wildlife.

  7. Project Victory Gardens: This is an agricultural therapy program in Aiken, SC designed to help veterans find new purpose by learning skills related to farming.  Culinary and homesteading classes are also offered.  (Saturdays only)

  8. Aiken State Park:  This park runs right along the Edisto river and is well known with nature enthusiasts for it’s great kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. There are paddling trails as well as hiking trails.  No boat?  Don’t worry, there are Canoe rentals on site.

  9. Lake Murray:  Just 30 minutes outside of Columbia is 50,000 acres of man-made lake.  There are 100’s of ways you can enjoy the lake including parks (Lake Murray Public Park, Lake Murray Dam Recreation Area, Dreher Island State Park, etc) boat rentals, tours, as well as fishing charters.

  10. Aiken Equine Rescue: This place is near and dear to another of our members and is a great way to check out the beauty of South Carolina horse country at the same time.  The Rescue provides a foster home for horses retired from the racing scene or who have suffered abuse or neglect until a permanent home can be found for them.  At any point, there are 60-70 horses on site.

  11. Catawba Cultural Center:  Rock Hill hosts the center to pay tribute to the history and customs of the Catawba Indian tribe with walking trails as well as plenty of opportunities to learn more about the Catawba tribe.

  12. Congaree National Park: One of the newest national parks and the only in South Carolina, this park has 26,00 acres of forest with opportunities for hiking, paddling, camping, bird watching, and synchronized firefly viewing (in May of each year).

  13. Sesquicentennial State Park: This 1400 acre park has two nature trails, canoe and kayak rentals, fishing and camping site availability, all within Columbia city limits!

  14. Saluda Shoals Park: This 400 acre park has paved and unpaved trails, a boat ramp for getting out on the Saluda river fishing and a splash pad for the kids on hot days.

  15. Owen’s Field Park: Between the new pump track and the (wheelchair accessible) playground, you can find us out at Owens field on the weekends. The park also has a skate park, disc golf, tons of fields for a pick up game, ball fields, and hiking trails. It is located right next to the Owens field Airport.

  16. Palmetto Trail: With 500 miles across the state dedicated to biking and hiking, it is the longest pedestrian and bicycle trail in the state with 26 passages ranging from 1.3 to 47 miles. This is accessible for day trips, weekend trips, or longer depending on your desires. You can pick up three of the passages of the Palmetto trail right in Columbia!
