Keystone habits, what are they and why to they matter?

Happy smiling woman with curly hair lounging on couch.

Some habits matter more than others in making significant changes in our lives. These ‘keystone habits’ make the biggest impact on how you eat, play, live, work, sleep, destress, etc.

Keystone habits teach us that success isn't necessarily about achieving perfection in every area of our lives but that if we can identify a few key habits, and focus on those instead, we can hack our way into better health. Think: work smarter, not harder.

The keystone habits are those that when they start to shift, remake other aspects of our life with little to no effort.. Think habits related to eating, exercise, stress management and sleep. It’s common for people who nail get that right start to sleep and eat better, drink less, etc.

Up next week, how to create new habits

But for now, spend sometime evaluating the habits you have, the ones you like, the ones you’d like to improve, the ones you would like to eliminate completely.

This week make a list of your daily activity for at least 3 consecutive days (a week would be better), think about everything you do. When you eat, snack, do that thing you’d really not like to do. Once the list is complete, start to look for trends. Start to look for the things you do in patterns or gateways to other bad habits. If you get home from work and sit down on the couch does that lead to grabbing the remote which then leads to heading to the kitchen for a beer which leads to the chips, etc. These are the trends and the keystone habits that once discovered will be your pathway to more successful habits! Get your list compiled and we’ll figure out how to create new habts next week.
