Muscle loss and aging

Muscle mass and strength decrease noticeably as we age, especially after 50.

  • Starting around age 50, most people lose about 1% of their muscle mass each year, and strength declines even quicker at about 3% per year.

  • Without regular strength training, strength can drop by 4% each year after the age of 75.

  • The gradual loss of muscle and strength leads to a higher chance of falls and subsequent fractures. Of these incidents, hip are the most concerning and often fatal.

  • Research indicates that individuals suffering from fragility fractures face double the risk of death compared to those without fractures.

  • 22–58% of individuals who experience hip fractures die within just 12 months of the incident.
