Does coffee dehydrate you?

Before we get into discussion about water, the cream of the crop of the hydration show, let’s spend a bit of time highlighting the dregs, coffee.  I know that for me, a life without coffee is a life pretty much not worth living.  But what’s the story with caffeine and hydration?  Does drinking a cup or two of coffee in the morning set you back on your hydration requirements?

For you coffee and tea lovers, the research is favorable.  While caffeinated drinks might have a mild diuretic effect initially, habitual consumption of coffee does not increase dehydration.  The literature suggests that, when consumed in moderation, coffee provides similar hydrating qualities as water. And for you exercising coffee drinkers, the research is even better, all minor diuretic effects of caffeinated beverages are negated  by exercise.

All good news for you java fiends out there, though water is still your best option for hydration and you should aim to drink it every day.  Stay tuned for next week when we discuss how much water we should be drinking daily.
