Summer School 2024: Improve your balance

Research has gone above and beyond in showing that training for stability and balance does in fact improve your balance in addition to reducing your risk of falls.  Balance training is so important especially for seniors that including balance training at least once a week is a recommended for individuals over the age of 60 by the CDC, NIH, and WHO

This summer we’re going back to school to work on improving our balance for four main reasons:

  1. Injury prevention:  safety first!  The rest of these things mean nothing if poor balance has you in the hospital with a broken bone.  Having better balance is a sure fire way to reduce your risk of falling this is everyone from athletes to senior citizens.

  2. Improved posture and strength:  Posture and balance come hand in hand, if your body is properly aligned, you stay in your center of gravity which is the sweet spot for better balance.  Also in working to improve your balance, you will be working stabilizer muscles in your lower legs, hips, and core.  Improving the strength of these muscles will pay back in dividends with regards to your balance.

  3. Better performance:  Whether you participate in sports or outdoor activities like hiking, paddle boarding, cycling, etc the improvements you make in your balance will shine through in other performance metrics like agility, coordination, and reaction time.

  4. Easier daily activities: In everything you do on a regular daily basis from walking in the neighborhood to loading the dishwasher, these tasks are all made easier by having better balance.

Stay tuned, next week we’ll preview what summer school will entail.
